Indie Hacking from Hong Kong: What Nobody Tells You

Building and launching internet products from Hong Kong comes with unique challenges and surprising advantages. My honest take after a year of trying.

The Time Zone Advantage

Hong Kong sits at UTC+8, which means you're awake during the Asian work day and can catch the US market opening in the evening. For async work, this is surprisingly useful.

The Community Gap

The indie hacker community is predominantly US and European. Product Hunt launches favor those time zones. Getting early upvotes is harder when your network is 12 hours away.

What Actually Works

  • Build in public — Twitter/X and Threads have global reach regardless of time zone
  • Focus on Asian markets — there's enormous untapped demand
  • AWS HKSTP — programs like the Ideas Launcher 2023 exist. Use them.

The Real Advantage

Hong Kong's density means you can find collaborators, designers, and early adopters within walking distance. The startup scene is smaller but tight-knit.

I wouldn't trade bases. Adapt, and it works.
